iPhone 1.1.3 Released - Problems with Gmail
| At last, iPhone firmware 1.1.3 has been released. Among the new features: • Google Maps "Locate Me" feature (as well as the cool hybrid feature) • Re-arranging of iPhone home page (including dock) • Can drag and drop applications onto the home page • Webclips (essentially MobileSafari bookmarks on the home page) • Multiple SMS messaging However, there have been some bumps with the latest release. Among the issues is a problem with GMail. Essentially, the GMail protocol on the iPhone has been changed from POP to IMAP, causing a sync of GMail folders (which can be good or bad, depending on how you have your main GMail account set up). To work around this behavior, you can manually configure POP or manually configure IMAP. As for me, despite the cool Google Maps features, I still can't quite part with my free 3rd party apps, so I'll be waiting for the jailbreak for this firmware, which is not yet available, but there is this status page up to track when one becomes available. As a (unannounced) side note, with iTunes 7.6, you can finally manually manage music and videos on your iPhone -- hallelujah! (still no official iPhone disk mode, but getting closer Update (4/17/08): It looks like IMAP support has been pulled from GMail (not sure yet if this is temporary or permanent). | ![]() |

I bought the apps for my touch. I had jailbroken 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, but I'd much rather not mess around and get it right from Apple. What 3rd-party apps are you using? I found I used the pirated iphone apps on my ipod, and had some amusing but not very useful 3rd-party apps like the etcha-sketch.
The locate me feature doesn't work as well on the touch, it is about 4 miles off at my office. I expect millage to be highly variable depending on how the connected wifi is setup

The main 3rd party apps that I find handy are the OpenSSH w/ terminal as well as the Apollo chat client. The times that I have had to use it, it has come in very handy. I also have some games (Yahtzee & Sudoku) that fall into the "nice to have" category, as well as the "SysInfo" app. I also like the "ToDo" app (although I don't use it as much as I should.

That being said, it would be nice (especially now that the iPhone has been out for awhile) if Apple would open it up more freely to 3rd party app developers. A pipe dream, I know, but a nice one.
