XM & Siruis Satellite Radio to Merge?
| According to The Register, there are talks in the works for a possible merger of XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio (It would sure make me a quicker adopter if I didn't have to choose between the two - can anyone say Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?  ).Update (2/19/07): Well it looks like the merger plans between XM and Siruis finally have been officially announced. |  |

Copernic Desktop Search vs Google Desktop
| I have been fighting off installing Google Desktop (due to privacy concerns), but thanks to Outlook's woeful searching ability, I finally had to take the plunge and get some desktop search engine. I am currently in the process of configuring and evaluating Copernic, which I have read good things about. Also, it seems that Copernic doesn't seem to have the privacy concerns that Google Desktop has. |  |  |

| Thanks to a new product, Avvenu, you will be able to listen to your iTunes library from any Windows PC, Mac, or Windows Mobile 5 smartphone. There are some limitations (i.e. iTunes DRM’d songs will work), but overall a cool idea! |  |

Obama for President?
There are stories floating around that Barak Obama will throw his hat in the ring for the Democratic President Candidate (and my personal opinion thus far is that I think he would make a good one - surely no worse than the other presidential candidates we will be offered).
OK, anyone want to take bets on how long it will be before some right-wing news outlet starts trying to link with extreme Islam radicalism?
Update (1/19/07): It looks like Fox News decided to be one of the trailblazers in waving the Radical Islam flag; this time asserting that Barak Obama was educated in a Madrasah school.

More Apple iPhone Feedback
| More feedback (mainly bemoaning the lack of 3G support for Europe and the closed architecture) on the upcoming Apple iPhone from The Register and MacWorld UK. However, at least one Register UK writer wants the Apple iPhone to succeed. Movie Double Shot
| Today was a rare day in that I made it through two movies: Little Miss Sunshine and Lucky Number Slevin. Little Miss Sunshine definitely falls into the category of a sleeper hit. A family road-trip comedy with some dark edges, it will no doubt keep audiences laughing (at least it kept me laughing with the generous doses of offbeat humor). Lucky Number Slevin reminded a great deal of another movie: The Usual Suspects in that both movies had very clever writing with a lot of twists and turns. Also, in both movies, everything was not what it seemed to be at first appearances. All in all, a movie that I would definitely give a thumbs-up to. |  |

Apple iPhone Announced
| Today was the big Apple keynote speech at the MacWorld Expo and the big announcement was the introduction of the new Apple iPhone. There will be a 4GB model ($499.00) and a 8GB model ($599.00). The new iPhone is run by a 3.5" touch screen (that has 320x480 resolution). It runs Mac OSX, has the Safari web browser bundled in, has built-in WiFi (802.11b/g) plus Edge GSM network and built-in Bluetooth. It also has automatic landscape mode (by simply turning the iPhone horizontally). It also has a couple of nice MP3 browsing features (that currently can't be found in iTunes  ). Needless to say, this phone does look very cool and it does seem that alot of thought has gone into the interface (of course, I would expect nothing less from Apple ). Also, it will be interesting to see how the touch screen functions when the iPhone is finally available to the public (scheduled GA is June 2007). I am still teetering on the fence whether I can justify plopping down the minimum $499.00 amount for this.(I do hope that this iPhone doesn't scratch as easily as the current line of iPods do. Otherwise that touch screen might get hard to view in a hurry. )On another note, one of the attendees of the MacWorld Expo evidently ran into Wozniak, who gave his views on the new iPhone. Firefox 2.0.0.1 Upgrades: Trials & Tips
| After doing extensive testing (and waiting for my prized themes to become compatible w/ Firefox 2.0) on one of my desktops of Firefox 2.0.0.1, I finally was happy with it and decided to take the plunge and upgrade my other computers from Firefox 1.5.0.9. I hit several snags (mainly with extensions as well as different snags on different computers ).

Pentax Firmware Updates
| It looks like Pentax has firmware updates for six of it's digital SLR models. All of these updates simply "improve SDHC support" over previous versions. One caveat is that since the only available updates are on the Japan site, it might not be a bad idea to wait until the firmware updates are available in your particular region. |  |

Bose On-Ear Headphones
| Even though the consumer in me was severely stunted by last month's issues, I still managed to pick up a pair of Bose On-Ear headphones. Even though they were outside the range that I would normally spend on headphones, they do sound nice! |  |

Wii Initiation
| I had my first Wii initiation today. I was walked through the process of creating my own Mii character (which was fun ) and then was challenged to a bowling match, which I (very surprisingly) won (getting four strikes in the process which gave me a score of 165). Needless to say, with regular bowling, it is usually a steady stream of gutterballs mixed in with the occasional spare. Much as I hate to admit it, this was fun and I could see myself getting one even though I still consider myself in the non-gamer category. Update (1/06/07): (you knew this had to come ) It appears that there is a vulnerability in Opera 9.02 (which is the version that the Wii runs), which could crash the Wii if executed.Update (1/18/07): Got challenged by one of my co-workers to a Wii Bowling match today and managed to (miraculously) better my previous Wii bowling score by getting a 217 (8 strikes!) - unbelievable!. |
iTunes To (Automatically) Get Lyrics
| It seems that Gracenote (which iTunes uses to get artist and track listings for CDs) has reached an agreement with all five major record labels and will be providing song lyrics automatically in addition to the track listings.
